515 BC – AD 70
Second Temple Judaism
- Location
- Judea and the Jewish diaspora
- People involved
- Priests, scribes, Pharisees, Sadducees, Essenes
- What happened
- After the return from Babylon the Temple was rebuilt and Jewish life was shaped by synagogue worship, scriptural study and messianic expectation. The Greek translation of the Hebrew Scriptures, the Septuagint, spread through the diaspora from the third century BC.
- Why it matters
- Christianity emerged inside this world; its Scriptures, vocabulary and worship patterns are unintelligible apart from it, and the Septuagint shaped which books early Christians read as Scripture.
